Special Choral Event — Handel’s Messiah (Part I — Advent & Christmas)
December 19, 2014 @ 7:30 pm
St. Matthew’s Sanctuary Choir will perform Part I (Advent,Christmas) of Handel’s Messiah, Friday evening, Dec.19, at 7:30. The choir will be joined by a string ensemble, harpsichord and guest soloists.
Messiah is the most widely performed choral work in the world. A New York music critic counted 21 performances in New York during advent. The Atlanta Symphony Chorus performs the work annually, and St.Luke’s has offered a Messiah sing-a-long, the first Sunday evening in December for over 30 years. St. Phillip’s Schola will perform Messiah with the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra, Dec.13.
If you have sung Messiah in high school, college, church or have always wanted to sing it, please join us on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 for rehearsal. If your rehearsal time is limited, you can order a part enhanced rehearsal CD for individual practice.
George Handel wrote Messiah in 22 days and signed it,”to the glory of God’. The text is from the King James version and the Book of Common Prayer. The proceeds of the first performance at Christ Church in Dublin went to relieve 200 people from debtor’s prison and support 2 hospitals. The donation to hospitals continued until Handel’s death.
The proceeds from our performance will go to the music budget and charity. Tickets will be sold for $10 and a reception will follow the performance. Your participation in the choir or attendance at the performance will be greatly appreciated. When performed, the music and texts offer a great spiritual experience of the Advent season.
